's what this is all about. >> congressman ryan? >> i want to thank you as well, martha. danville, kentucky, centre college. i want to thank you, joe. it's been an honor to engage in this critical debate. we face a very big choice. what kind of country are we going to be? what kind of country are we going to give our kids? president obama, he had his chance. he made his choices. his economic agenda, more spending, more borrowing, higher taxes, a government takeover of health care. it's not working. it's failed to create the jobs we need. 23 million americans are struggling for work today. 15% of americans are in poverty. this is not what a real recovery looks like. you deserve better. mitt romney and i want to earn your support. we're offering real reforms for a real recovery for every american. mitt romney, his experience, his ideas, his solutions is uniquely qualified to get this job done. at a time when we have a jobs crisis in america, wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the white house? the choice is clear. a stagnant economy that promotes more government dependency, or a dyna
to play last night. and paul ryan, some could say he held his own. the fireworks flew from the start. >> vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan. >> one month ago tonight on the anniversary of 9/11, ambassador chris stevens and three other brave americans were killed in a terrorist attack in benghazi. wasn't this a massive intelligence failure, vice president biden? >> wherever the facts lead us, wherever they lead us, we will make clear to the american public because whatever mistakes were made will not be made again. >> this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blame the youtube video, now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> with all due respect that's a bunch of malarkey. when there's a crisis we pull together as a nation. even before we knew what happened to the ambassador the governor was holding a press conference, holding a press conference. that's not presidential leadership. >> the debate moved from foreign policy to the 47%. >> it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilli
from you. snap cnn/orc poll shows 48% of registered voters thought paul ryan won last night and 44% thought biden was the winner. the same poll has the more likeable of the two candidates leading vice president biden by ten points, 53%-43%. >> let's show some clips of this thing. i don't think, howard dean, it's a surprise that paul ryan may have come across as more likeable because joe was -- joe had to make up for lost ground in the first debate. he had to come out as the fighter. >> the interesting thing is the cbs poll shows biden winning by a wide margin. i think it was something like 50-33 or something like that. i think the cnn poll's a little weird here. there's something funny about that. >> i think the cbs poll is. >> i'm hearing the cbs poll. i'm not sure if people even watched the debate that were polled in the cbs poll. >> it was undecided debate watchers supposedly. so the interesting thing is, you know, i think biden did what he had to do, which is to get the ticket back on target. >> yeah. >> why don't we watch some clips. >> really? you don't want to give an opinio
'm larry kudlow. this is "the kudlow report." our top story tonight, paul ryan's resounding victory in last night's debate with vice president joe biden. the first ten minutes sealed it. 43 million people watched and the polls are showing a snap cnn poll gave the win to ryan and so did the cnbc survey. biden's snarky, disrespectful laughing and out-of-control interruptions hurt him enormously. plus, he gave no reason for barack obama to be reelected ryan played and cool and smart. the best line today from marco rubio. take a listen to this. >> let me tell you, it's not easy to do a good job onstage when you have a heckler on the stage with you. >> biden misled everyone with a string of falsehoods. tonight we have the man who developed the cia's program that detects deception. what you'll hear from him is going to shock you. then again, maybe it won't. >> plussic brai ibreaking news, panetta warns a cyber pearl harbor is about to happen and the fingerprints point to iran. also tonight, the nobel peace prize gets awarded to the european union celebrating socialist bailouts and a useless burea
. thursday's debate between vice president joe biden and paul ryan was a substantive contest between two men who were well briefed and on their game. conventional wisdom was twofold. biden needed to calm democrats. he needed to set the stage for his boss to regain his footing during his second debate with mitt romney this tuesday. i think biden accomplished that mission. i think what made the difference was that biden was aggressive, uninhibited with preoccupation by preserving his own image and adept at leveraging his stature. the single best exchange biden wasted no time for calling out ryan for his apparent hypocrisy when it comes to stimulus funds. >> look at the $90 billion in stimulus. the vice president was in charge of seeing this. $90 billion in green pork to campaign contributors and special interest groups. >> i'm not allowed to show letters. go on our website. he sent me two letters saying, by the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of wisconsin. we sent millions of dollars. you know what -- >> you did ask for stimulus money. >> sure he did. >
is true with his running mate, paul ryan. unfortunately, we'll probably hear more of that this week. we do have a great surrogate team and they're on the ground in their respective cities or states. they move around. i certainly move around. you talk about deval patrick, i'm in chicago, rahm emanuel, stephanie rawlins blake in baltimore, kasim reed, the list goes on and on. we have the best candidate in president obama and vice president biden. we have the greatest surrogate team, and they're on the ground in those places where there are real people with real issues and real problems, and they're talking about the things that the president talks about, jobs and the economy, health care, education, energy, and tax reform. those are the president's themes. he's never walked away from any of those issues, and it's easier, i think quite frankly for mitt romney to have multiple positions on the same issue because he has no plans. he has no ideas. he has no proposals. he's not ready for prime time. >> okay. we've got a month to go. please spread the word among the surrogates you mentioned we are
ryan. they really went at it, especially biden. here he is, mr. fact check, joe biden, challenging congressman ryan on ryan's medicare plan. >> this is a plan that is bipartisan. it is a plan i put together with a prominent democrat senator from oregon. >> there is not one democrat who endorses it. not one democrat who signed the plan. >> my partner is a democrat from oregon. >> he says he no longer supports your plan. >> we put it together with the former clinton budget director. >> and so it went. but now all of a sudden we have mitt romney checking joe biden's facts concerning the consulate attack in libya. and this is something you haven't yet heard. this is mitt romney speaking just a short time ago, here he is in richmond, virginia, you need to hear this. mitt romney. >> the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he's doubling down on denial. and we need to understand exactly what happened. when the vice president of the united states directly contradicts the testimony, sworn testimony of state department officials, american ci
-on-one with mitt romney and his running mate paul ryan speaks with dana bash. and another round of bitter partisan bickering breaking out as congress discloses new details about the attack on the u.s. diplomatic compounds in benghazi. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> with just 27 days to go until the presidential election, we begin with mitt romney's bumpy day out there on the campaign trail. first, his campaign had to clarify something romney said earlier about abortion later. they said romney will stop telling a new story apparently designed to show his softer side. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta is in ohio right now on the road with the romney campaign. >> reporter: wolf, mitt romney's been trying to open up to voters in recent days telling stories of friends who have died, even service members who have died in combat. but the mother of one falling navy s.e.a.l.s. says she's offended as democrats accuse romney of trying to hide his true beliefs. it's been a staple of the stump speeches, the gop nominee talking about the deaths of friends, even soldier who
of joe namath's last year. >> i know rex ryan has to come up publicly and say he's our guy, we support him, but the numbers don't lie. >> you've got to go to tebow. and not only bad numbers, tebow had bad numbers last year for denver, but he was a leader, he was a quarterback. he was the captain. i mean, you know what? tebow's not going to have better numbers, but he'll get better results. we all like mark sanchez. i like him. >> he's nice. >> but it's time. they've got to try something. >> he's playing with no confidence at all. >> i know. >> it snowballs. >> this is a bad -- he's set up to fail. no doubt about it. you bring tebow in, he's set up to fail. but at the same time, you've got to do it. >> you've got to try. >> got to try. >> how about them birds? >> let's watch the orioles beat the yankees last night. it can be that way. i can be generous. >> you're all class. >> yankees going up two games to none in the alds, scoreless in the first. watch this, i don't even call it a slide. ichiro scores from first. he looks like he's going to be out by ten feet. comes in, he dances once,

the bush doctrine? also, the biden ryan debate in kentucky. will the vice president avoid any quote bumps in the road as the president described his own performance over the weekend and how will paul ryan perform on the biggest stage of his career. plus, you say tomato. i say electoral. find out how some trade decisions could affect the election in some key states. good morning, it's monday, october 8th, 2012. i'm chuck todd. i know some of you are celebrating as if this is some federal holiday. there is no day off when it's 29 days until the november election. if mitt romney is going to be president of the united states, then next week, iowa and ohio will be coin flip races. we're seeing a more confidence mitt romney on the trail. >> we had a little debate earlier this week and i enjoyed myself. you had the chance to hear his answers or non answers. now, of course, days later, we're hearing his excuses. >> but while the romney campaign body language has changed, both are anxiously awaiting the first good post debate polls. those will give us our first look at the race after the debate an
. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s
're sticking with their game plan, that is to draw contrast with paul ryan. that they intend to do that. that they intend to talk about foreign policy as well as domestic policy. and that they want to continue to draw the contrasts with the romney campaign because they believe romney has been kind of soft in telling us where he's going to go on foreign policy in his speech today as well as on domestic policy, how would he reduce that deficit. so they still think they've got openings here, wolf. and they do. anything can happen. overnight's a lifetime in politics, particularly when it comes to a close presidential race like this. >> and all those folks thought that president obama had it wrapped up a few days ago, not yet. gloria, stand by. mitt romney was clearly hammering away at the president's foreign policy before a military audience today and sketched out a stronger, bolder response by a romney administration. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta has more on that. >> reporter: wolf, after millions of americans watched mitt romney go toe to toe with president obama at t

ryan? >> i'd like to hear from biden, i'm not sure. >> biden being biden. but biden's a very skillful debater. >> here we go. >> he's a survivor. >> wait a minute -- that's preceded by idiot -- >> those are your words. >> he's been in the senate. both he and ryan have been, i think, five or six terms each. >> ryan in the house. >> right. >> he's in the house. but they've both had the same experience in terms of election. but 40 years of debating putting biden in somewhat of the driver's seat because of that. just because of his experience. >> we haven't seen him in five months on a tv network. on a national network. has not been an interview in five months. the last time he was on, he came out in favor of gay marriage and then the president had to -- >> he's saving himself. >> and there hasn't been a press briefing. a white house press briefing in 15 days because those can be on video. the gaggles you can't videotape and it's only people that are traveling with the president. credential guys can get into the other one, and there hasn't been one in 15 days. >> amazing. >> you wouldn't
